What we do

Diverse in the experience they offer tourists, Queensland Rail's scenic rail services in North Queensland provide the ultimate means of travelling through particularly remote and unique natural landscapes. These include the lush, world heritage listed rainforest and cascading waterfalls of the Barron Gorge and the unexplored, rustic terrains of Queensland's Gulf and Savannah countries.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

QR Traveltrain's popular Kuranda Scenic Railway tour is heralded as one of the world's greatest day trip adventures and an amazing historical feat in rail engineering. A winding 105 minute rail journey from Cairns to Kuranda, it attracts more than 500,000 passengers annually.

The train now boasts a hand-painted locomotive, depicting 'Buda-dji' the carpet snake. According to ancient Aboriginal custom 'Buda-dji' once travelled the same area as the train and tells a marvellous Aboriginal Dreamtime legend, now enjoyed by all those who travel on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Queensland Rail Traveltrain works in close partnership with other award-winning operators in the region including the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Freshwater Connection Restaurant. Holiday or day trip packages are available for the ultimate Kuranda experience.

Other Far North Queensland Products

Traveltrain's other scenic service is also the oldest rail service of Traveltrain's fleet, the Gulflander, travelling inland from the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Gulflander travels between the Outback North Queensland towns of Normanton and Croydon, 140 kilometres in distance each week. Offering a fascinating experience to passengers, the Gulflander travels through some of the most remote and inaccessible countryside on the Queensland map. It remains the only railway line which has never been linked to the main Queensland Rail network.
