KSR Services Closed

8 February 2007

Media Release

Monday, 12 February, 2007

QR has closed the Kuranda Scenic Railway Service for approximately four weeks as a precautionary measure while rigorous geotechnical testing, repair and stabilisation work is done on the site where a land slip occurred last Thursday 8th February.

QR’s Group General Manager for Passenger Services, Mike Scanlan, said that while QR understands the disappointment the local community and the tourism industry will feel the priority has to be the safety of passengers and staff.

“We understand this closure will impact on both visitors and businesses that benefit from this service but we feel we have no choice but to suspend the service until we are satisfied that the work needed has made the site safe,” he said.

“We estimate that the line will be closed for approximately four weeks, but we will know more detailed information in two weeks time when the site has been cleared and a full geotechnical survey has been completed.”

“This is a very difficult site with many technical and physical challenges that both our staff and contractors have to face.”

“At all times, we will comply with the requirements and assessment made by Workplace Health and Safety officers who are also undertaking their own investigations.”

“The initial work will entail a full survey of the area to ensure it is safe for workers to start the clearing work. Once that is complete only then can the full geotechnical analysis begin which will then provide us with the information we need to decide on the best way to repair the site. “

“QR representatives have been proactively contacting industry partners and community representatives and we are very grateful for their support and understanding while we undertake this important work.”

“Our staff have been consulted with suitable alternatives being discussed.”

We encourage visitors to the region to contact QR on 07 40369333 or visit www.ksr.com.au
